Home Sweet Home

As we slip into the lazy days of summer, many a bride dreams of the perfect at home wedding, I have to say I can’t blame them, there is no more perfect place than summertime in Spokane, with the never ending blue sky, the lush green of the native foliage and not to forget the to die for sunsets. I also was this starry eyed bride in the summer of 2003, that is indeed a story all on it’s own, but what I can tell you is that I wish someone would have given me the following bit of information. Whether you are tying the knot at home to save a few bucks or for the pure sentiment, you must consider the following:

Friends and Family. Although the day is yours, you must always remember that friends and family are guests at your wedding and MUST be treated as such, although they may have the best intentions to jump in and serve food, dj or park cars, whatever the case may be, you will enjoy them much more if they are with you to celebrate every moment of your special day…as guests not hired help. Remember you want to remain friends after the big day.

Rental equipement. Tables, chairs, linens, china, glassware, decor, lighting, napkins and on and on….you get the idea. I wonder how many out there have considered bathroom facilities? Yep thats right, I said it, did you know on average you need 3 facilities for every 150-200 guests for a 4 hour wedding. I am sure, you would much rather have your guests watch the father daughter dance than stand in a 20 minute bathroom line.

As with most weddings, alcohol will be served. This brings on an entirely different beast…liability. As the happy couple, did you know that you and the owner of the house are personally liable for every single guest that will attend your wedding. While I am not trying to rain on your parade…that is another subject, you must take this into consideration. I highly recommend you use a licensed bartender for your event, and add in some wedding insurance.

And yes the rain…always, and I do mean always, have a back up plan. While we are living the high life right now with all of our sunny days, it does rain in Spokane Washington USA in the summer. You do have options, pay to rent a tent, clear out all of the household furniture and set up in the house, which by the way you do need to have 6-10 square feet per person for ceremony space, OR as one of my favorite sayings go…Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance in the rain….so stock up on umbrellas and have a party, after all it is rumored to be said, that rain on your wedding day is good luck.

I have seen many a beautiful at home weddings, and I have to admit the nostalgia of being surrounded by all of your personal touches, will make for a day that will be forever etched in the memory of you and your guests. I do have to say keep these three things in mind when planning. 1. It is not going to always be cheaper, remember there are a lot of small details that add up to alot of big money. 2. Don’t abuse your family and friends, they want to enjoy your day with you not for you. 3. Save up the extra money and hire a professional event/wedding planner to help you, especially on your big day…it is an investment that you won’t regret.

So remember to…Relax it is just a party…
